I find that one of the hardest things for me to do is to look past a person's bad grammar and writing and to try to read deeper into what is being said. Why should it bother me if someone else doesn't take the English language as seriously as I do?

The Absolute End [Apr. 30th, 2006|09:31 pm]
This is it. Really. Nothing left for this class after this. I'm torn between getting this over with and wanting to try and sweep up a few extra points if I can. So, the question on the table is about humanity, huh? Well, I don't think it matters as much who or what is human as how they are treated. Let's look at some examples. Frankenstein's monster read Paradise Lost. Paradise Lost for crying out loud. In French. I'd say his ability to reason was on par with humans. But everyone he met was afraid of him and tried to kill him. What about "Bicentennial Man"? He was a robot, but he fought for his own rights, rights that humans had simply for being human. He wasn't even a living, breathing being but he still had the same intelligence, understanding, and emotions as a human. And what about all the clones and replicants in all the other stories that were persecuted and enslaved and harvested? They weren't even different from humans except for the way they were born (and a few enhancements to replicants), but they were regarded as lower than animals. Even if they weren't human, they had the same abilities as humans and therefore the same intrinsic value.

Oh, and you should definately go here. www.atlantaopera.org Look who's directing the next opera.

I see the light at the end of the tunnel [Apr. 24th, 2006|12:34 am]
So close to the end. Must..not..succomb..to..apathy.

So what can I write about? Last week was still NLMG, so I could talk about BG. But what to say without repeating lj question? Alright, I'll move around a bit, but I won't get as far as New Caprica. Well, for starters, President Rosilyn has some of the highest moral standards out of anyone on the show, and yet she put a cylon out of the airlock. When it comes to cylons, there is no aspect of humanity as far as she is concerned. Two of the Sharons, the one that was in love with the Chief and has been reborn and the one that gave birth to Helo's baby, as well as the number 6 that was with Baltar when the colonies were attacked have begun to rethink the actions of the cylons and have feelings for some of the people on the Galactica. If they were to take notice, this would change the situation a bit regarding the way they treat cylons. They would have to see that cylons are not just a heap of circuits that they can dispose of how they see fit, but that they are actually intelligent beings that the previous generation of humans made enemies with and now must be reasoned with.

Well, crap. Only a few hours too late to answer the question for last week. Not a great way to start off this week. It's gonna suck.

So, finished Never Let Me Go. *yawn* Not impressed. Quite let down by the ending, in fact. So, the gallery served no immediate purpose. In fact, the cloning aspect meant very little in regards to the big picture. It seems the main emphasis, though not the main focus of the story, was on the art work. The clones were needed more as a medium to get to the art work being done by what some might consider to be subhuman to question the purpose for art and what role it has in humanity. I dunno. Maybe after I read someone else's ideas for our presentation I'll have a better grasp on it.

Well, Never Let Me Go has not really captivated me like some others have, even just in terms of novels about cloning. The plot has been kind of slow, and when it did start coming out, it wasn't anything earth-shattering. Clones being used for harvesting organs. Meh. Been done a dozen times. Not only does the idea not shock me any more, the more I see it come up, the more absurd the idea becomes to me. I don't see how any nation's morals could ever drop as low as to do this, at least over the table. As far as black market and such goes, can't really do a whole lot more about it than to try to keep it from happening and try to stop it if it does. Just not impressed at all.

The House of the Scorpion is about what many people fear may happen if humans are cloned: creating clones for the purpose of harvesting their organs. Most of them have their minds destroyed at birth and are kept alive until needed, but Matt is kept normally until he is needed. Both ways are sick and twisted. Clones are not property. They are fully human only born a different way. There is no way to tell a clone apart from another human being. Even comparing the DNA would make you think the two were twins, which would only give it away when you also compared their birthdates b/c they would have to be at least 9 months apart. If a clone is created, he/she should be treated just like another human being.

So, Blade Runner. The replicants are physically completely human and yet they are considered not to be b/c they are modified. They are faster and stronger than humans, and b/c some of them rebelled to the inhuman things the humans were doing to them, the humans freaked out and tried to kill all of the replicants that were not off-world b/c they were afraid of what they might do. It was their own fault in the first place b/c they treated them like slaves. Even if you created it, once it has established itself as a completely sentient being, you should no longer have authority over it.

So what's with all the man falls in love with female robot stories lately? It was in just about everything this week. Also, a good deal of this week was stuff that could have been summarized and not wasted our time. "No Woman Born"? Way too long. Wasted a good bit of my life I'll never get back. Same with The Stepford Wives. They just held down the suck button until the last possible minute. Could have made the whole thing in half an hour. </rant>

Pleasurebot in Buffy the Vampire Slayer [Mar. 2nd, 2006|08:52 pm]
Boy, is it ever the week of February 13-17. And I don't know if the html italics will work, but they're noted. So regardless of what people tell me about accepting the fantastic in fiction, I cannot accept Warren's made up girlfriend in this episode. I don't care what lame excuse you give, you have to at least make an attempt to explain how something impossible could happen. Say that there was a break in the space time continuum and Warren had a few extra years outside of time for all I care, or maybe that she was a project that he was working on as a part of a group that he stole and modified. I don't care. What I do care about is that there is no possible way for a college student to single handedly create something of this magnitude. It's one thing to force the audience to accept things about science that aren't technically possible yet. It's another thing entirely to force them to accept something that just couldn't be physically possible given the conditions.

The Boys from Brazil [Feb. 12th, 2006|09:29 pm]
In The Boys from Brazil, Dr. Josef Mengele is in the final stages of his plan to clone Hitler. He has placed 94 genetically identical copies of Hitler into families that resemble Hitler's in an attempt to recreate Hitler's childhood and ultimately make a new Hitler. The last part of the plan involves killing the fathers of the clones. Ezra Lieberman tries to stop Mengele, and eventually meets up with him after he has killed the father of a clone. After a struggle, the clone, Bobby, comes home, and Lieberman is able to convince him that Mengele was the one that killed his father. Bobby has his dogs attack and kill Mengele. Lieberman goes to the hospital, and the Young Jewish Defense League wants the list of the clones so they can find them and kill them. Lieberman refuses to give it up and even burns the list.

I think the movie was extremely confusing and hard to follow at times. Much of the plot was so subtle that it's hard to notice unless you're looking for it.

update for jan 30-feb 4 [Feb. 7th, 2006|02:06 am]
Sorry it didn't get out sooner, but my internet access was cut that week. So, Brave New World(i think just looks cooler than actual italics or underline). Marriage does not and can not exist. One of the key components of stability is concern only for one's self. If people get too close, they become concerned with the other person's happiness and how they can please the other, and pretty soon they value the other person more highly than they value everyone else and society as a whole. But in order that no one tries to form a lasting relationship, the "feelies" are encouraged and basically forced on everyone. This also helps the only care about yourself idea because you can have sex with anybody and everybody and the other person doesn't matter.

Frankenstein [Jan. 29th, 2006|04:11 am]
Last week finished Frankenstein. Monster told how he stalked a family to learn language. Demanded a female monster. Victor takes time off. Monster kills his friend. Victor gets arrested for it. Released when it's determined he wasn't in the area at the time. People wondering why he hasn't married Elizabeth yet. He says he's still going to go through with it. Starts to build a female for the monster, see's him peering in the window and freaks out. Tears the new monster apart. Monster gets pissed. "I'll be with you on your wedding night." Victor thinks he'll kill him. Cries over how much he'll be missed. Marries Elizabeth. Monster kills her. No sex for Victor. Spends the rest of his life (all of 3 weeks or so) hunting the monster. Monster upset over his death b/c he now is truly alone.

In other news, Guitar Hero is an awesome game. So is DDR, but I already knew that. So is Dr. Mario. I kick butt in Dr. Mario. I will take on any challengers.

I should go to bed. Check out the time stamp. Maybe I'll read a chapter of Huxley before I call it a night. Er, morning.
